Researchers on Issues that Impact Young People for People Who Care About Them

“How’s School?” The question adults reflexively ask, and kids hate to answer. The truth is, we care about our young people, dare we say, even worry about them. But staying connected to their world and all the complexity they navigate can be a challenge. The scope of issues in the "How's School?" podcast includes education, health, and psychology–but at the core is children's and teen's well-being, and our ability to face things that impact them without losing heart.

The five episodes in the first season cover issues that are urgent to parents and anyone who works with and cares for kids and teens. The hosts, Jen Lee and Joe Riina-Ferrie of Teachers College's Digital Futures Institute, talk with Teachers College Professors about issues like youth mental health, facing the climate crisis and gun violence. The conversations are personal and relatable, engaging with the feelings these issues bring up and finding a way forward.

Some episodes focus on schools, such as talking with Professor Sonya Douglass from the Black Education Research Center on creating a Black Studies Curriculum for New York City public schools, but many go beyond, like a conversation with Professor Limarys Caraballo on how to really listen to young people.
